Oct. 8, 2018 board minutes

The regular meeting of the School Board of Independent School District No. 544 was held in the Otter
Community Room at Kennedy Secondary School. Chair Melanie Cole called the meeting to order at 5:15
pm. The following members were present: Melanie Cole, Blaine Danielson, Missy Hermes, Natalie
Knutson, Matthew Lemke, and Stephen Vigesaa. Jerry Ness, superintendent, Mark Masten, business
manager and Elaine Jahnke, HR director were also present.
Blaine Danielson, clerk, established a quorum.
Missy Hermes made a motion to approve the agenda as presented. The motion was seconded by
Stephen Vigesaa and carried unanimously.
Reports were presented by the following:

• Natalie Knutson – Wellness, Policy
• Melanie Cole – Spec Ed Coop, Region I, Finance, Activities
• Missy Hermes – Staff Development, Curriculum Review
• Blaine Danielson – 544 Education Foundation, Buildings & Grounds, Meet & Confer
• Stephen Vigesaa – Legislative Liaison
• Jerry Ness – Superintendent
General Consent Items:
The following consent agenda was presented for approval:
1. Minutes from September 24, 2018 School Board meeting.
2. Bills and Treasurer’s Report – reviewed by Missy Hermes and Natalie Knutson prior to the start of
the School Board meeting:

Student Activity funds were reviewed by the School Board.

4. 2018-2020 Agreement between the School Board of ISD #544 and the
Curriculum Coordinator
Matthew Lemke moved to approve the consent agenda. The motion was seconded by Blaine
Danielson and carried unanimously.
Old Business:
1. Blaine Danielson moved to approve the Washington DC Trip request for Middle School students
scheduled June 10-13, 2020. The motion was seconded by Missy Hermes and carried
unanimously.
New Business:
1. Matthew Lemke moved to approve the request for two additional para educator positions (6.5
hrs/day): one at Adams School and one at McKinley School. The motion was seconded by
Stephen Vigesaa and carried unanimously.
2. Blaine Danielson moved to approve the 2018-19 Annual Report of Assurance of Compliance and
Mandated Reporting. The motion was seconded by Natalie Knutson and carried unanimously.
3. Matthew Lemke offered the following resolution and moved for its adoption:
RESOLUTION ON THE RETIREMENT OF CHRISTI BIEDERMAN
WHEREAS Christi Biederman began her employment with the Fergus Falls Public Schools in
August 1992, and
WHEREAS Christi has been a valued employee with the Fergus Falls Public Schools for the past
26 years, and
WHEREAS Christi has done an excellent job as a para educator and special education
paraprofessional and,
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Fergus Falls School Board to thank Christi
Biederman for her 26 years of dedicated service to the Fergus Falls Public Schools.
The motion was seconded by Stephen Vigessa and upon roll call vote being taken, the following
voted in favor thereof: Melanie Cole, Blaine Danielson, Missy Hermes, Natalie Knutson, Matthew
Lemke, and Stephen Vigesaa
and the following voted against same;
None.
Whereupon said motion was declared duly passed and the resolution adopted.
The next regular School Board meeting will be held at 5:15 pm Monday, October 22, 2018 in the Otter
Community Room at the Kennedy Secondary School.

Stephen Vigesaa made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 5:38 pm. The motion was seconded by Blaine
Danielson and carried unanimously.
A work session followed the School Board meeting.
