Music in Our Schools Month
March has been officially designated by the National Association for Music Education for the observance of Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM®). This is the time of year when music education becomes the focus of schools across the nation. MIOSM began as a single statewide celebration in 1973, and has grown over the decades to encompass a day, then a week, and then in 1985 it became a month long celebration of school music.
The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music. MIOSM is an opportunity for music teachers to bring their music programs to the attention of the school and the community, and to display the benefits that school music brings to students of all ages. Throughout MIOSM, we celebrate the student and all of the ways that music education drives their personal and academic success.
At the Fergus Falls Public Schools, we maintain strong music programs in our band, choir and orchestra programs. The foundation of our music program lies in the elementary level, with staff teaching music each day. Our music staff include: Geralyn Lyseng, Everett Jacobson, Joni Wasberg, Laurie Strom, Craig Peterson, Valerie Johnson, Janel Trosvig, Tammy Richards, Michelle Danielson, Scott Kummrow, Josh McGowan, and Denise Wiese.
Celebration Concerts for the Fergus Falls Public Schools include: March 1 – Middle School Choir (grades 6-8), March 12 – Middle School Orchestra (grades 5-8) and March 19 – All School Band (grade 5-12).
Congratulations to Mary Grotberg for participating in the All State Band and to Alex Lindgren, Ben Schierer and Eve Wickstrom for participating in the Mid-Level State Orchestra group.

NFL’s Super Kids-Super Sharing Program
Meg Garrahan, paraeducator at Kennedy Secondary School, went above and beyond for our school in the recent Super Kids-Super Sharing project. As part of Super Kids, Meg collected used cell phones for the Verizon Foundation to help all students engage in STEM education. Kennedy Secondary School and other local businesses contributed 58 used cell phones which were given to Verizon to wipe clean and repurpose, resell, or recycle. Proceeds went to STEM programs.
Because of her efforts with the cell phones, she was able to collect – 500 spiral notebooks, paper pads, binder; 12 games; 4 learning games; 8 jigsaw puzzles; 40 books; 2 baseball bags and 2 pink softball helmets; and the big surprise – 36 iPad mini’s with rolling case!! Thanks to Meg for her amazing efforts and to all who contributed their cell phones!
